High Court asks Enforcement Directorate not to summon, search Lawyer without orders

On Wednesday, the High Court of Calcutta asked the Enforcement Directorate not to summon advocate Sanjay Basu or search his office or home without its orders. The High Court will hear Basu’s appeal against the ED raids on Monday.

The ED had questioned whether the division bench of justices I P Mukerji & Biswaroop Chowdhury, now hearing all Ponzi cases, could hear the case as the ED was probing the money trail & not Ponzi cases.

However, Basu’s counsel Jayanta Mitra told the HC that the ED press release made it clear that the probes were pursuant to two chit fund companies — Pincon Group & Tower Group. He also told the HC that Basu had been engaged as a lawyer by the Pincon Group from 2014 to 2017. The High Court said the Ponzi probe may continue.

The Court said, “For the time being there is no need of his being further summoned to the office of the Enforcement Directorate or his house & office being searched".
