NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar withdraws from Supreme Court lawyers’ chamber allotment list

Bengal Governor Dhankhar set to be new Vice-President, BJP hails 'kisan putra' | India News,The Indian Express

Days after NDA's Vice-President candidate and former governor of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar's, name appeared on the Supreme Court lawyers' chamber allotment, he withdrew voluntarily and requested that his chamber should be given to other lawyers in need.

Dhankhar had managed to get the chamber almost five years after he first applied for it and was allotted a chamber in the new Lawyers’ Chambers in D Block of the Additional Building Complex of the Supreme Court on a twin-sharing basis. He was one of the 468 lawyers who had been allotted new chambers.

In a communication issued by the Supreme court Bar Association on Tuesday, the President of the Supreme court Bar Association, Vikas Singh, wrote to the registrar of the top court and stated, "Dhankhar ji has conveyed his wish to voluntarily withdraw from the process of chamber allotment so that other lawyers in need of a chamber may be allotted the same."

With a long list of lawyers waiting in line for years, getting a chamber in the apex court is a matter of great prestige, credibility, and most importantly, luck. Every year, thousands of advocates become eligible for a chamber to be allotted to them, but only a few hundred get it.

Speaking to India today, senior advocate and President of Supreme Court Bar Association, Vikas Singh, said, "This gesture by Dhankhar is appreciable at this point when he doesn't hold any constitutional post. He is neither the governor nor the vice-president so far. This gesture sets high standards for a person.

Singh said, "Dhankhar could have kept the chamber for his personal use, but his voluntarily gave it up."
