The Home Ministry informed Lok Sabha that the decision to include a language in the Eighth Schedule is usually based on several factors such as the historical and cultural significance of the language, so there is no fixed criterion followed for inclusion of a language in Eight Schedule.
A total of 22 languages of India are included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
There have been demands from time to time for inclusion of several languages in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution. The Government is conscious of the sentiments and requirements for inclusion of other languages in the Eighth Schedule.
