[Breaking] CJI Chandrachud agrees to urgent listing of Hijab Ban matter as split verdict hinders exams

 

The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud has agreed to consider listing urgently, matter concerning the Hijab Ban in Karnataka.

Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora mentioned before the Court that urgent interim directions are required to permit Muslim girl students to appear for exams which will be conducted Government Colleges only.

She submitted that Muslim students have already lost one academic year and have to switch to private institutions after Karnataka Government banned entry with Hijab. 

CJI, to this said that he shall look into the issue and list the matter before a third bench.

In October, 2022, in appeal against Karnataka High Court judgment allowing the government decision, two-judge SC Bench had delivered a split verdict. While Justice Hemant Gupta upheld the hijab ban decision, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia ruled against the same as arbitratory and unconstitutional.
