Justice BR Gavai of Supreme Court has hailed CJI DY Chandrachud for being a beckon of 'Women Empowerment' and stated that his long tenure will aid in implementing his ideas to thus regard and bring about necessary changes.
Speaking at a function organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to felicitate the CJI, Justice Gavai mentioned CJI's foster children who have special needs and the fact that he does go over and above to take care of them is testament to his belief in Women Empowerment.
"He has two foster children both of whom were his help’s children. They have special needs. The Registrar in Supreme Court who looks after the medical aspects, also exclaimed once that “What CJI does for the girls, none else do even for their own children”. He is someone who believes in women empowerment", Justice Gavai said.
On a lighter note, he expressed disappointment that he hasn't yet gotten an opportunity to be part of a bench with the CJI and remarked that he wouldn't at all mind joining the same as a 'Junior Judge'.
"When I was being considered for elevation, it was Justice Bobde and CJI (Chandrachud) who recommended. I never got to sit with him on a bench. I wish someday I can sit on a Constitution bench with him. I do not mind sitting as a junior judge with him!"
Since both the Judges belong to Bombay High Court Bar, he took pride in the fact that 'son of the soil' holds the highest office.
Highlighting that in CJI Chandrachud's tenure, Supreme Court has seen higher disposal rate than filing rate, he pointed out that his long tenure will help in bringing structural changes.
