On Friday, the High Court of Calcutta ordered a high-level investigation into the whereabouts of Ghana, who used to roam the premises of a Kalyani Court, & who was allegedly abducted by a group of men about four months ago, while directing the Ranaghat SP to initiate proceedings against the investigating officer over inaction.
Ghana is a pig.
For the past several years, Ghana had made the Kalyani ACJM Court premises his home, & was a familiar sight for regulars. Several Lawyers would feed him every day, along with the stray dogs. So, when he was "abducted" by unknown people on March 25, a group of his carers — both Advocates & locals — got together & lodged a complaint with the Kalyani police.
The night guards on duty on the Court premises even told the cops that some unknown people had arrived in a car & forcibly taken Ghana away.
However, the Cops allegedly did nothing. Days later, a group of Lawyers, led by Anumita Bhadra, went to the cops & filed a ‘missing complaint'.
"Four unknown people came in a white car & forcibly dragged the pig (Ghana) out of the court premises & took him away. The car had a yellow number plate. Two among the night security guards recorded the entire episode on their cellphones," the complaint mentioned.
Based on the complaint, the Kalyani police finally lodged an FIR.
But, with the police investigation leading nowhere, a group of Lawyers moved to Calcutta High Court last week, in a plea alleging police inaction.
Justice Shampa Sarkar, after hearing the matter twice earlier, strongly criticised the police inaction on Friday. The judge wanted to know why the police couldn't locate the car & the alleged culprits despite having video clips of the Ghana abduction episode. She also directed the Ranaghat SP to monitor the investigation. The Judge also directed the Ranaghat SP to initiate proceedings against the investigating officer, who did not add sections under the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act, 1979, while initiating the case. Taking note of the abduction, the Court also ordered adequate security arrangements at the Kalyani ACJM Court.
