On Wednesday, the High Court of Gujarat pulled up the Patan district authorities over a petition filed by a couple complaining the registrar had rejected their marriage registration application, saying no such marriage had occurred.
The couple's advocate submitted before the court that they lived in the same residential colony.
A month later, on Feb 13, the registrar rejected their application stating the temple management did not confirm the couple had married there when the authorities inquired.
They urged the HC to direct the authorities to register their marriage & issue a certificate.
They also complained the marriage was not getting registered due to the influence of the woman's family members.
The state government tried to defend the case, but it did not go down well with Justice Sangeeta Vishen, & she questioned, "Under which provision of law did they go for verification? The court would like to know when they started visiting & inspecting the place to verify if a marriage was solemnized.
In this manner, in every case of birth & death, will they be visiting the place to verify whether birth or death has occurred?"
The couple's lawyer also informed the court that after the elopement, the couple had approached the high court for police protection from the woman's family members.
The High Court had last month ordered the Patan police to protect them.
The court has sought a reply from the authorities concerned by March 29.
