The Orissa High Court is set to have Centre for Judicial Archives. CM Naveen Patnaik in the presence of Justice Vineet Saran, Former Supreme Court Judge, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court Dr. S. Muralidhar and other judges of the High Court has laid the foundation stone for it and additionally for High Court Employees' Residential Complex.

Justice Saran while expressing his satisfaction on both the projects said that construction of residential complex for the employees was his dream during his stint as the Chief Justice.

He thus thanked Justice Murlidhar for realising the same during his tenure and also concieving the idea of Judicial Archives. Justice Saran also conveyed the appreciation sent by the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

Announcing Orissa High Court as the front runner in the fields of digitization and virtual court hearings, he lauded the State Government for the staunch support of which he vouched referring to his tenure.

Justice Murlidhar while elaborating on the idea of Judicial Archives, mentioned his visit to the Record Rooms of District Courts in 2021. He told that a judicial record of the year 1814 found in the District of Ganjam made him think of preservation and digitization of old records so that they can be made available to researchers for tracing out the evolution of the judicial system.

Justice Murlidhar also lauded the Govt for unwaivering support and called the Centre for Judicial Archives, the exclusive complex for employees and Judicial Infrastructure Management Agency (JIMA) as the first ever initiatives of their own kind.

CM Patnaik praised the 'unique' idea of Judicial Archives and remarked that it is not only the collection of the documentary heritage of the nation but also the collective memory of the institution and passive witness to history.

Noting that history is not just a document but a learning curve and guiding light for the future, he betted for the beneficiality of the initiative.

 

"High Court has done a commendable job in preserving the Judicial History by embarking upon this initiative, as the old records are a treasure-trove in our judicial and legal arena," he said.

The initiative will aid historians and legal luminaries for meaningful reconstruction of history, he added.

"The access to research scholars and the public would stimulate academic activities through symposiums and seminars."

 

The CM also advocated for publication of academic journals and sharing of archival records with other academic and archival institutions in the country for enhancing the awareness on judicial heritage.
