[Breaking]- In a first, Supreme Court hearing transcribed live

4 Main Types of Law: Which One Is the Best For You? - Sharda University Blog

The Supreme Court of India, for the first time, has used an Artificial Intelligence (AI) software driven by Natural Language Processing for live transcription of its hearings.

The Live Transcription has been launched on an experimental basis. The Constitution Bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud is taingup the matter Maharahtra Political crisis.

In the hearing room, a screen displaying the live transcription of court proceedings has been placed facing the lawyers. The Top Court is also inclined to make transcripts of oral arguments available on its website.

In January this year, Sr. Advocate Indira Jaising has suggested allowing audio transcripts of hearings for archival which the CJI has taken into consideration as a suggestion.

The CJI told the Court that they are seeing how the technology works, atleast in the Constitutional Bench Matters so that they can have full record of arguements.

"Ofcourse, it helps judges and the lawyers but it also will help law colleges as they can analyze how matters are argued, what are the submissions, its a huge resource."

The Counsel for Uddhav Thackeray faction, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibbal shared with the Court that when he was practising in New York, they use to have EBT (Examination Before Trial) proceedings and that was in the 70's.

"They would record everything that was said in the course of that examination, even then, so that we knew, lawyers knew what was going to happen."

At this juncture, SG Tushar Mehta informed the bench that Gujarat has e-courts, in the sessions division where even internal whispering are also recorded.

Mr. Sibbal candidly responded that in that case that's very dangerous.

"That's hazardous, completely hazardous," he said.

CJI Chandrachud told everyone that the only issue is that it if there are two or more voices at the same time that causes a little bit of problem but for the personnel can clean up the errors by the evening.

"They suggested that during course of the day, the Counsel will get the link, so the Counsel can look at it, but by the time in the evening they would have cleaned up the entire transcript and given it to us," he added.

"That's wonderful, truely a milestone," Sr. Advocate Sibbal responded

But never irrelevant.
