On Friday, the Supreme Court transferred petitions from various High Courts to itself on legal recognition of same-sex marriages under the Special Marriage Act.
The Top Court has listed the petitions for 13th March, 2023. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud issued directives, noting that various petitions pending before high courts involving similar issues should be transferred to and decided by the Supreme Court.
The Court has also issued Notice to the Central Government and sought reply from them until February 15th, 2023 in from of affidavit. The Centre has until now, remained constant in its opposition to such recognition and maintained that the same is against Indian Culture.
A slew of petitions on this issue are pending adjudication in Delhi, Gujarat, and Kerala High Courts.
