The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud has recused himself from hearing contempt proceedings against comedian Kunal Kamra for his alleged distasteful tweets about Supreme Court and Judges.
The CJI has asked to list the matter after two weeks. He said he won't be a part of the bench taking it up, as the subject tweets concern his order.
"We will place this before a bench which I'm not a part of because the comments were made on an order I passed."
Kunal had stated his take on the Supreme Court order granting bail to Journalist Arnab Goswami which the Ex-Attroney General of India, KK Venugopal found distasteful, offensive and attacking the institution of Judiciary.
Following this, contempt proceedings were initiated against the Comedian. The AG has remarked that it is time that people understand that attacking the Supreme Court of India unjustifiedly and brazenly will attract punishment under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1972.
In his reply, Kamra had submitted that the tweets were only in lighter vien for people having similar viewpoint as him and that humour should be appreciated by even Courts. He wrote an essay type reply himself, without any legal representative.
