NALSA launches two new campaigns to aid underprivileged and prisoners

2018 : Year Of Great Accomplishments For National Legal Services Authority ( NALSA)

Under the guidance of Hon'ble Executive Chairman, NALSA and Chief Justice of India (Designate) Justice DY Chandrachud, NALSA has devised the following two campaigns from 31st October, 2022 to 13th November, 2022:

1. “Empowerment of Citizens through Legal Awareness and Outreach” – A Pan India Campaign for bridging the gap between the institutions and the underprivileged by spreading legal awareness and ensuring delivery of legal entitlements to eligible beneficiaries.

This Public Awareness Campaign aims to be fundamental in decreasing the vulnerability of the marginalized strata of the society as it would facilitate their capacity to foster a just, peaceful and inclusive society. The target population for the same is not only our villages but promoting legal literacy at all levels possible in collaboration with electronic media.

The key objectives of this campaign is to –

1. Organize a mega legal awareness camp on NALSA Module in every district of the country.

2. Visit by outreach teams to every village panchayat and subdivisions of the villages at least once in the span of two weeks.

3. Deliberation on issues of affecting the countrymen such as the fundamental rights and duties as envisaged under the Constitution, women-related laws, child related laws, human rights, environmental laws etc.

2. “Haq_humara_bhi_to_hai@75” – A Campaign for providing basic legal assistance to persons confined in prisons and child care institutions to commemorate the 75th year of Independence.

The under trial prisoners is that segment of population whose human rights stand violated because for them the process itself becomes the punishment and the lack of awareness of that process fuels their misery. The prison is a morbid world where sun and light are banished and the crime has neurotic dimensions and liberty is of paramount value and all agencies of the criminal justice system should come together and work harmoniously to ensure the effective realization of legal rights to every individual behind bars and to keep a check on prolonged detention and overstays.

The key objectives of the campaign are to ascertain:

1. That person is represented by a lawyer at the trial or for filing of appeals for bail or against conviction.

2. Providing free legal counselling or services or assistance as required in a person’s case including drafting and filing of appropriate applications, etc.

3. That the concerned person has been provided with updated information regarding status of their cases and facilitate communication with lawyers (private and legal aid lawyers).

4. That-

a. In case of convict, whether entitled to pre-mature release, if yes processing of application etc.

b. In case of UTP, eligible for release under UTRC or otherwise on bail etc.

5. If the person is in need of any urgent medical assistance.

6. That the child lodged in child care institution is represented by a lawyer.

7. That the child is aware of the status of his/her case.

8. That the child is in contact with his/her guardians.

Social media is bold.

Social media is young.

Social media raises questions.

Social media is not satisfied with an answer.

Social media looks at the big picture.

Social media is interested in every detail.

social media is curious.

 Social media is free.

Social media is irreplaceable.

But never irrelevant.

Social media is you.
