High Court Judge allows Videography of Court Proceedings

2.34 Lakh Cases Pending At Calcutta High Court, 41% Judges' Posts Vacant

On Thursday, the High Court of Calcutta recalled its summons to Trinamool’s arrested Birbhum president Anubrata Mandal’s daughter Sukanya and 5 others in the teacher recruitment scam case, stating the supplementary affidavit that had prompted the directive was no longer being considered relevant to the proceedings.

In a move with little precedent, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay allowed private videography of Thursday’s Court proceedings. While videography had been permitted in accordance with a 2015 High Court order & became a norm after the advent of Covid, Senior Advocates couldn’t recall any instance of almost everyone in the courtroom recording proceedings on their mobile phones.

Justice Gangopadhyay said the summons stood withdrawn after Sukanya reached the Court premises with her testimonials & letter of appointment as a teacher, as ordered.

A few hours earlier, Sukanya’s father — in CBI custody in the cattle smuggling case — told reporters that he couldn't fathom why his daughter had been summoned.

He said that “My daughter passed the exam. She has a certificate"

Trinamool responded to the revocation of summons by saying it proved that there was no merit to the petition challenging Sukanya & the other five candidates' recruitment.

"The complaint, which appeared so grave that a directive had to be issued to police to secure their presence, lost all significance the next morning. If this had to happen, was it justified to subject Sukanya & five others to public humiliation?" he said, clarifying that Trinamool had unfailing faith in the judiciary.

Advocate Firdous Shamim had Wednesday submitted a supplementary affidavit along with a list of 6 names when the HC was hearing a plea filed by Soumen Nandi about primary school appointments. The affidavit alleged that Sukanya got a primary school teaching job in 2012 without passing the stipulated Teacher Eligibility Test.
