A Delhi Court has sentenced a woman & her lover to life imprisonment for murdering the former’s 7-year-old daughter, saying the proportion between the crime & the punishment is a goal respected in principle, & in spite of errant notions, it remains a strong influence in the determination of sentences.
Additional Sessions Judge Arun Sukhija sentenced Munni Devi & Sudhir Kumar to life imprisonment & imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on each.
The Judge noted in an order on Nov 29 that Courts are expected to operate the system so as to impose such sentence that reflects the conscience of the society & the sentencing process has to be stern where it should be.
According to the prosecution, on Dec 13, 2017, the girl’s father had filed a missing complaint. Her body was found on the roof of Gazipur Dairy farm with her neck slit.
The police said the mother of the child confessed her guilt, saying that she, along with her lover, murdered the daughter as she had seen both of them in an objectionable position.
While convicting both in April this year, the Court said a holistic appreciation of all the evidence could lead to no other conclusion except “murder” & that too at the hands of both accused persons who committed the barbaric act jointly with the common intention.
