Watch | Heavy Police Presence in Mathura Over Threats by Hindutva Groups

'The Wire' brings a ground report from Mathura where Hindutva groups have vowed to install an idol of the deity Krishna in the Shahi Idgah mosque to mark the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary.

Tense atmosphere prevailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura on Thursday, December 6, on the anniversary of Babri Masjid’s demolition. Right-wing Hindutva groups have decided to carry out a “Jal Abhishek” to “purify” what they call the Krishna Janmabhoomi. They have also vowed to install an idol of Lord Krishna in the adjacent Shahi Idgah mosque, prompting authorities to deploy additional forces on the ground.

The issue trended on Twitter, with Hindu groups issuing chants of “Mathura aayenge, Makhan chadayenge (‘We will come to Mathura and offer butter to Lord Krishna’)”. Rightwing handles, some even verified, shared inflammatory content, despite the call for this “Jal Abhishek” having been withdrawn.

The Wire‘s Yaqut Ali and Sumedha Pal have a ground report from Mathura.
