New Delhi: A 23-year-old Muslim man from Bengaluru
was allegedly assaulted and forced to drink urine in police custody,
prompting authorities concerned to suspend the police official allegedly
responsible for the same, according to the Indian Express.
Suspended sub-inspector Harish K.N. is associated with the
Byatarayanapura police station. A departmental inquiry has been
initiated to probe into the allegations levelled by the victim’s family.
On Thursday, December 2, the victim, Tausif Pasha (23), was taken to
the police station over a quarrel with his neighbour at around 1 am,
according to Tausif’s father, Aslam Pasha.
He also alleged that his son was assaulted in the custody, and the
cops had demanded money for his son’s release. “But we never knew that
Tausif was subject to brutal torture till he came out of the police
station,” said Aslam Pasha.
Tausif alleged that he was hit with a cricket bat at least 30 times
in his abdomen by the suspended cop and two other police constables.
“They hit me with a cricket bat at least 30 times and when I asked them
for water to drink, they made me drink urine. They also cut my beard. I
begged them not to do so as it was part of my faith, but they said this
(police station) was not a religious centre. They also made me clean the
police station,” he added.
According to Aslam Pasha, his son was released only after the
intervention of MLA B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan. He added that Tausif was
admitted to Victoria Hospital and was discharged on Monday, December 7.
The victim’s family also showed images of bruises on Tausif’s back,
thighs and on other parts of his body.
Based on the interim report submitted by the police department on
Monday evening, sub-inspector Harish K.N. was suspended for dereliction
of duty, not reporting to the police station and for not registering the
case, according to Sanjeev M Patil, deputy commissioner of police
(West), Bengaluru.
This is the third such incident of police torture reported from Karnataka recently.
A few days back a 22-year-old Muslim youth was allegedly assaulted in custody
at the Varthur police station in Bengaluru after he was detained in a
theft case. The victim had to undergo surgery to amputate his right arm
after the assault. One police head constable and two police constables
were suspended after the news of torture emerged.
In another incident, the Criminal Investigation Department of the Karnataka Police arrested a police sub-inspector of Gonibeedu police station after he alleged to have forced a Dalit man to drink urine.
