Justice (Retd.) Kurian Joseph of SC urges Delhi CM Kejriwal to open places of worship to public

 Justice Kurian Joseph

Retired Supreme Court Justice Kurian Joseph has written to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, urging him to open up places of worship to the public as the second Covid-19 wave has “significantly” slowed down.

Commending the efforts of the government and healthcare workers in combating the pandemic, Justice Kurian said it was "heartening and relieving" that the intensity of the second wave has “come down” in Delhi. As the capital unlocked in a phased manner, restaurants, bars, theatres and auditoriums were permitted to resume operations at 50% capacity.

"These are positive markers indicating the society getting back to normalcy," Justice Joseph wrote in his letter to CM Kejriwal.

Given this, the retired judge questioned the need to place restrictions on the entry of public in religious places.

“Permitting religious worships and services in places of public worship would not otherwise cause any adverse impact, factoring other activities permitted. It is a matter of fact that allowing people to attend religious worships and services would only help in alleviating their deep stress and it would only infuse them with positivity, hope, inner strength, and confidence, which is the need of the hour,” said Kurian.

In the letter, Justice Kurian further pointed out that “prohibition of services in places of public worship will be discriminatory and may amount to denial of the Constitutional rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 19, 21 and 25.”

In its latest report, the central committee set up under the National Institute of Disaster Management has warned that a third Covid-19 wave could peak around October. The panel, citing a recent study, said India can witness "6 lakh cases per day in the third wave" if vaccination rate does not improve in the country.

Even now, health experts remain concerned by the pandemic situation, particularly the addition of new cases from just one state -- Kerala.
