The Division Bench of the Gauhati High Court, comprising Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita in the case of In Re-Plight of Children in Temporary Shelter Homes v. The State of Assam has taken a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding the temporary shelter camps in Assam where people who have been displaced on account of eviction drives are being housed and asked the State to notify the exact number of similar shelter camps in the State.
The Amicus Curiae in this matter has filed a detailed inspection report prepared by him which indicates that there is lack of proper drinking water facility in the camp.
The Court instructed to take instructions on the report submitted by Mr. B.D. Konwar (Amicus Curiae) and ordered the concerned authorities to immediately address the issues highlighted in the report and Potable water supply shall immediately be started in the camp.
The Court further instructed the Respondent State to notify the exact number of similar shelter camps in the entire State of Assam wherein people who have been displaced on account of eviction drives are being housed and the statistics would include the gender-wise distribution as well as the number of children sheltered in all these camps.
The Court listed the matter on 08.05.2023 for next hearing.
