The Kerala High Court has suo motu initiated criminal contempt of court action against a lawyer after he allegedly made disparaging remarks against a sitting judge.
The contempt case (Cont.Case-Crl. No. 2/23) against Lawyer Yeshwanth Shenoy was registered on Monday & is being considered by a division bench comprising Justice A Muhamed Mustaque & Justice Shoba Annamma Eapen.
During Tuesday’s hearing, the court issued notice to the advocate & also appointed a senior woman advocate to assist the Court to conduct the proceedings against the advocate Yeshwanth. The Court has not assigned a date for the next hearing yet.
A contempt case was initiated by the court after a female judge filed a complaint regarding the improper behaviour of the advocate while in court.
Meanwhile, advocate Yeshwanth filed a petition (WP-C No. 6912/23) before the HC on Monday alleging that the same judge is hearing only 20 cases in a day whereas the other judges of the high court are considering hundreds of cases. Considering the petition during an admission hearing on Wednesday, Justice Shaji P Chaly directed the judge to engage a counsel to represent her & scheduled a hearing on Friday.
