Madhya Pradesh: On Sunday, the State Bar Council decided to remain on strike on Monday despite a division bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday declaring the state-wide strike of advocates as illegal & warming of Contempt of Court proceedings against those who don't resume work forthwith.
The acting secretary of State Bar Council, Geeta Shukla, in a press statement, said that opinion of district & tehsil bar associations had been sought on the issue but Sunday being a holiday, opinion from several places have not been received. In the wake of this, the general council of the State Bar Council has decided to continue the strike on Monday & a special meeting of the general council has been organised on Monday evening to decide on future course of action based on opinion received from the district/tehsil bar associations.
The State Bar Council had called for a three-day state-wide strike of lawyers from March 23 against an administrative order of the chief justice of MP high court asking judges of the district court to dispose of 25 oldest cases pending in their courts within three months. The advocates are protesting the order & at places like Bhopal, they have been on a strike demanding withdrawal of the order for over a month.
