Anguished by continuance of the abhorrent practice of manual scavenging and horrific sewer deaths despite decades-old laws and directions of the Apex Court and the 'Swachh Bharat Mission', the Supreme Court has sought state-wise data on demolition of dry latrines.A bench of Justice S R Bhat and Justice Dipankar Datta asked the Union Govt to place on record within 6 weeks steps taken pursuant to the Supreme Court's 2014 judgment directing a series of measures to be implemented by the Centre and the states to identify and rehabilitate manual scavengers as per the two laws - Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993, and the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
