National Green Tribunal orders ABCI Infrastructure to pay for Mizoram stone quarry collapse

National Green Tribunal: Are the recent appointments unconstitutional?

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed ABCI Infrastructure to pay Rs 70 crore for operating a stone mine without environmental clearance after 12 people died in a quarry collapse in Mizoram in 2022.

The National Green Tribunal's principal bench in Delhi recently pronounced the judgement asking the construction firm to pay the said amount to Mizoram's chief secretary within a month.

The mine from where the ABCI Infrastructure extracted stones near Maudarh village in south Mizoram's Hnahthial district had collapsed on November 14 last year, killing 12 workers.

The Mizoram Govt, through its lawyer, had earlier told the NGT that the ABCI Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, the project proponent, "was indulging in illegal blasting for mining."

The state's counsel, Siddhesh Kotwal, had also told the green body that a "compensation of Rs 1 lakh each has been given to the deceased, & payment of ex gratia is awaited from the PM's Relief Fund." The NGT was hearing the suo moto case of the tragedy it registered for the first time on November 28.

The NGT principal bench comprising the tribunal's chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, judicial member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi, & expert members Prof A Senthil Vel and Dr Afroz Ahmad, was not happy with the State Govt's previous submissions.
