In his Farewell address, Justice S Abdul Nazeer spoke about remunerating Junior Lawyers justly. The discussion is slowly spreading in the legal sphere as only lastly, CJI Chandrachud has remarked that Junior Advocates aren't slave and they should be paid fairly.
Justice Nazeer also advocated for providing them with ample opportunities to brief matters and gain experience.
“Junior members should be given reasonable opportunities to brief and argue in matters, whenever possible…They must also be paid decently.” “These kids are learning to gauge the depth of this profession and navigate their way. We cannot afford to lose such good talent just because of the perception that litigation, as a career option, is financially unviable,” he said.
Not only this, he has called on senior and experienced members of the legal fraternity to be the change they wanted as a junior. A ‘decent pay’ to the juniors would inspire more talented and dynamic young members to enter the profession, he said.
Adding that the younger generation of lawyers and their valuable inputs are needed to provide equitable and accessible justice and to reach the last voice crying for justice, which otherwise, cannot be heard, Justice Nazeer showed support for CJI's earlier remarks on the same issue.
He also spoke about role of good mentorship in building these young minds.
“The younger generation needs a mentor to channelise their energies and act like an invisible helping hand. All of us have had mentors in this profession. Now, it is our duty to become one for the new generation,” he said.
Justice Nazeer didn't also mince words in raising the very visible gender-inequality issue facing judiciary.
“If I were to say that the Indian judiciary is immune from the gender inequalities that exist in our society, I could not be further away from the reality.” he remarked captiously.
While he mentioned shortcomings, he however remained hopefull for future and displayed his utter faith in the institution.
“The situation we see today is not as grim as it used to be earlier. The Supreme Court has always strived for excellence, and it has come a long way ever since its inception.” Justice Nazeer said.
Praising CJI Chandrachud's guidance at the helm of the Judiciary, he exhibited confidence in Apex Court facing challenges of today’s ‘dynamic scenario’.
