Road accidents in the country have
decreased by 8.1 percent in the year 2021 as compared to 2019. The
injuries due to road accidents have also decreased by 14.8 percent. It
was revealed in a recent report by the Road Transport and Highways
Ministry.
However, it stated that fatalities on account of road accidents have
increased by 1.9 percent in 2021 corresponding to the same period in
2019. During the previous year 2020, the country saw a decrease in
accidents, fatalities, and injuries due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the
resultant nationwide lockdown.
India is committed to bringing down fatalities caused by road accidents.
The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has also formulated a
multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on
Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency Care.
It has implemented a scheme called Grant of Financial Assistance for
Administering Road Safely Advocacy and Awards for the Outstanding Work
Done in the Field of Road Safety regarding the same.
