A 'court jamadar', who shifted to online mode to collect his tips from Advocates, was suspended by the High Court of Allahabad on Thursday.
A viral image purportedly showing a QR code of Paytm stuck on
bundle-lifter Rajendra Kumar's waist was going viral for the past few
days. In the image, some lawyers were also seen scanning the QR code
& paying him the 'bakhshish' (tip).
Taking note of the viral images, Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal suspended
the bundle-lifter, who was attached to the court of Justice Ajit Singh, a
High Court Judge. The chief justice had also received a letter from
Justice Ajit Singh on Nov 29, 2022, in which he had shought strict
action against court jamadar Rajendra Kumar.
The suspension order was passed by registrar general of Allahabad high court, Ashish Garg.
The order states, "Under the order dated November 29, 2022 of the chief justice, passed after considering the letter dated November 29, 2022 of Justice Ajit Singh, wherein strict action against the court jamadar, Rajendra Kumar-I, employee number - 5098, bundle-lifter, attached with Justice Singh, for using Paytm wallet in court premises has been desired to be taken. Hence, in view of it, Rajendra Kumar-I, employee number - 5098, bundle lifter/court jamadar, attached as court jamadar with Justice Ajit Singh is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect."
The suspension order further said that the jamadar should be paid subsistence allowance during the suspension period, subject to his furnishing a certificate that he was not engaged in any other employment, trade, profession or occupation. According to a senior HC lawyer, whenever an advocate wins a case, bundle-lifters, who are attached with judges as helpers, ask for 'tips'. "Lawyers generally give them a few rupees as 'gratitude'. In this case, however, the image went viral as Rajendra Kumar had adopted a modern way to collect tips," he added.
