High Court notices to DGP, Home Secretary on CCTV in Police Stations

Indian history and rule of law : a legal principle that was born long ago - iPleaders

On Friday, the High Court of Andhra Pradesh issued notices to the higher officials of the police department in the contempt petition filed challenging the inaction in complying with the high court orders in setting up of CCTV cameras at all police stations.

The HC directed home secretary, director general of police & director general of prisons to file counter affidavits.

Lawyer  Thandava Yogesh filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition in 2019 seeking directions to install CCTV cameras at all police stations & jails in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. The high court after hearing the PIL directed the police department on July 15, 2019 to comply with the apex court guidelines & install CCTV cameras at all police stations.

Yogesh moved a contempt petition contending that even after more than three years, the high court directions were not implemented. He said that the police department did not take sufficient measures to ensure the directions of high court & the apex court are complied.

Considering the arguments of Yogesh, the high court bench comprising Justice C Praveen Kumar & Justice V Sujatha issued notices to the respondents to file counter affidavits in the contempt petition.
