On Tuesday, a Pocso case accused reportedly tried to end his life by consuming poison as soon as the Irinjalakkuda fast track special Court (Pocso) Judge pronounced his sentence.
The accused is Ganeshan, 63, of Chennamkadu Veettil, Cherkkara, near Nattika. The judge, K P Pradeep Kumar, has sentenced him to 48 years of imprisonment on charges of raping a girl below eighteen years. He will, however, have to undergo a jail term only for 20 years since the sentences under different sections run concurrently.
The Court has also slapped a fine of Rs 1,20,000 on the accused.
The accused has been sentenced to 20 years of RI & a penalty of Rs 50,000 has been slapped for the offence under section 376 AB of Indian Penal Code relating to rape. The judge has also sentenced him to another 20 years of RI & slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He has been awarded different jail terms & fines under other provisions too.
Five-year RI for Pocso case accused
In another case, the first additional district sessions judge P N Vinod has sentenced a 50-year-old man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing three girls. The judge has also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on the accused, Kunthara Veettil Babu of Painoor near Thanniam Kizhake Nada in the district. The punishment was for the abuse of one of the three girls & she was only five year old then. The trials in the cases relating to the abuse of the other 2 elder girls are continuing.
