Following a spike in the number of road accidents, the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety has urged Tamil Nadu to intensify a crackdown against overspeeding vehicles.
Around 14,100 people died in road accidents last year across the state. This is almost 80% more compared to the previous year, according to official data. Overspeeding was the cause of most accidents.
Retired Judge Abhay Manohar Sapre, who is the chairman of the committee, said that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and CCTV cameras should be maintained in working order for better enforcement, but the ANPR project in TN has remained a non-starter for years.
Sapre stressed on the need for use of helmets & seat belts as they have saved 50% of lives during an accident, according to an analysis on road accident data by the state authorities.
An official release said that the chairman was satisfied with the post-crash measures that were in place in the golden hour to save accident victims due to government initiatives like Nammai Kakkum 48 (NK 48).
The SC panel chief said that highways should be made a focus of attention, because around 64% accidents & around 67% of total deaths in the state took place on highways.
