On Tuesday, Lawyer Priya from Baldev Nagar in Haryana's Ambala became a shining example of gender equality, when she came to the bridegroom's home in the same city on horseback, leading her baraat with a ceremonial sword in her hand.
"I am extremely happy for my ghurhcharhi (ride on a horse). This day never comes in the lives of girls, as the custom is traditionally restricted to boys, who are given priority in most families. But my parents treated me & by brother the same way," said Priya.
She said that her parents allowed her to pursue law despite opposition from their relatives who claimed that she would not find a suitable match if she chose this field.
"But my father motivated me to pursue studies in this field, & to become a lawyer or even a judge. I never felt that my brother was given more importance than me," she added.
The bride's father, Narendra Aggarwal, said that he wanted to send out a message that there should be no discrimination between girls & boys & to dispel the myth that boys were superior to girls.
He added that "I always treated my daughter like my son. We did "ghurhcharhi" of our daughter to give a message to the society against foeticide & that girls should get the same respect as boys. If a girl's parents support her, she can reach the top".
In feudal Haryana, which is battling with a skewed gender ratio, Narendra is a trend-setter of sorts. He said he had distributed sweets at the birth of his daughter, much to the surprise of elders in his family.
