Can think of any example where you were completely hungry for hours or days? If yes, why? Were you fasting or were you looking for something edible in a remote area? Were you lazy But imagine starving 365 days a year for the next 20 years, what would you do then?
You have 100 rupees per day to spend on food, everything else remains constant - your clothes, shoes, gadgets and facilities are still there. What will we do now? Cleanliness will not be a concern for me here.
This is poverty
Scattering is a way of life, not only in terms of food but also for clothing, shelter, entertainment, education and everything else. In our country, nearly 200 million people go to bed hungry every night. What would happen if you became one of them? I know that someone in our upper-middle class who sometimes fasts and cries sometimes does not get a 'fast plate' on time.
Poverty can lead to lack of opportunities, natural disasters, geopolitical inequalities, health deprivation due to caste-system in our country but it is definitely not an option. An elderly person, living alone, suffers from acute gout because he does not have access to health facilities. A married woman with her 3 children, and a husband who works as a migrant construction worker in Dubai, is poor because she is not allowed to move out of her home, neither for work nor anyone else For the cheese.
A youth, who was recently dropped out of college, is poor because even though he earns Rs 5000 every month, his parents often remain unwell, an alcoholic brother and a niece whose education is important. A family of four who lost all their belongings in a flood is poor because their God has decided.
In all four examples, can you indicate that poverty is the cause of their circumstances or is it a consequence? it's hard to say!
