17 years after MLA Malkhan Singh was shot, 15 sentenced to Life Imprisonment

Fifteen people, including former zila panchayat head of Aligarh, Tejveer Singh Guddu, have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Court in UP's Bulandshahr in connection with the murder of the then MLA from Iglas seat in Aligarh district Malkhan Singh and his gunner 17 years ago.

District & Sessions judge Pankaj Kumar Singh also imposed a fine of rs 1.5 lakh on the main accused Tejveer Singh.

Malkhan Singh, 60, was the BJP MLA from Iglas assembly constituency from 1996 to 2002. He later joined the RLD.

The case dates back to March 2006, when Malkhan Singh & his gunner, Prem Pal, were shot dead by a group of people outside the residence of the legislator in the border area of Aligarh & Bulandshahr districts. Two people sustained injuries in the incident.

Thereafter, a case was registered in the matter at Quarsi police station in Aligarh on a complaint by Malkhan Singh's elder brother & eyewitness Dalveer Singh, who is 78 years old now. According to Dalveer, the murder of the ex-MLA was the fallout of a "political rivalry". Later, on the directions of the High Court of Allahabad, the matter was transferred to Bulandshahr in 2008.

RP Sharma, Dalveer's counsel, said, "The trial of the 15 accused, including Tejveer Singh, has been completed. The court held all the accused guilty of murder. Singh's brother Dalveer Singh put in all his efforts & struggled in the last 17 years to get justice for his dead brother." Of the 18 accused persons, two died during the trial & one is still absconding, the lawyer added.

Following the verdict, Dalveer said, "I'm very happy with the judgment. It has been a difficult time for us. My brother's murder was clearly politically motivated. I knew nothing about the court or its procedures at the time. I had prepared myself like a student who is going to take exams. I have invested a lot of money & time to get justice for my brother. Now, for once, I can sleep peacefully."
