E-Commerce Entities- Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal get CCPA notice for violating toy selling norms

 

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued notices to e-commerce entities Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal for the sale of toys that are violating the standards directed by the Centre. 

CCPA has also written to the General Director of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to take necessary action.

The e-commerce entities were asked to submit the report within 7 days from the issuance of the notice. Failing to do so, could land them under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 2019.

The authority has expanded its campaign all over India to prevent the sale of spurious and counterfeit goods that violate the terms of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) set by the government. This is applicable to the consumer durables such as electric immersion water heaters, electric iron, domestic gas stove, microwave oven, sewing machines etc.

CCPA has written to the District Collectors across India regarding the same and to submit Action Taken Report to the authority.

 

It is specified in the Consumer Protection (E-commerce) Rules 2020 that no e-commerce entity shall adopt any means of unfair trade practice, whether in the course of business on its platform or otherwise.

According to Section 2(10) of the Consumer Protection Act 2019, the term "defect" means any fault, imperfection or shortcoming in the quality, quantity, potency, purity or standard which is required to be maintained by or under any law. Whereas, "defective" means the toys which do not conform to the compulsory standards under the act.
