Poor Internet Service affects WFH, Consumer Court penalizes BSNL

The Almora district consumer court has penalised public sector telecom company BSNL for failing to provide uninterrupted broadband services to one of its customers, affecting the complainant’s “work from home” schedule.

Rohit Joshi, an employee with a private company, had taken a broadband connection from BSNL by paying Rs 6,925. The telecom company had assured 70 mbps speed, but the consumer told the court that he had got only 15 mbps speed and that too with frequent interruptions.

After hearing the case, the court on Friday ordered BSNL to return the paid amount to Joshi along with compensation of Rs 6,000 for “mental harassment and legal expenses”.

Joshi, in his petition, stated that he had taken the broadband connection on February 24, but could not do his work properly “even for a day due to slow internet speed. ”

“I had faced embarrassment in front of my colleagues after my boss ex- pressed his anger as I was not able to attend virtual meetings due to pathetic broadband services,” Joshi said, adding that he complained to BSNL “as many as 200 times, but to no avail. ”

Later, Joshi subscribed to internet services from another company and asked BSNL to refund his money.

After going through the evidence such as broadband speed records and complaints sent to BSNL, the court ordered BSNL to refund Joshi’s money with an interest of 6% from the date of filing of the case. Besides, the court ordered the public telecom company to pay compensation of Rs 3,000 to Joshi for “mental harassment” and Rs 3,000 for litigation fees.
