Calcutta HC Bar Association president Arunava Ghosh, speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of 9 Additional Judges on Wednesday, said: “Please don’t be afraid of your lawyers.”
Ghosh remark came a day after Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay said Advocates had come to his courtroom with paperweights, prompting him to allow video-recording of proceedings on Aug 18.
He said that “Please don’t be afraid of your lawyers. Because today, in the newspapers it has come out that we go to the courts with paperweights to place our cases. It is not that. We place our reasons. It may vary with the judge".
We have a very nice set of judges, very honest & we have very cordial relations with all,” he added, reiterating: “Don’t be afraid. We don’t carry paperweight. Therefore, we shall always be with you.”
On Tuesday, Justice Gangopadhyay, referring to the insinuations made about his videography permission, had said: “Some people were standing at the back of the court with paperweights. That was why I had allowed videorecording of proceedings.”
A clip capturing the commotion in court went viral on social media on August 19. It featured, among other things, Justice Gangopadhyay recalling the summons issued to Trinamool Birbhum president Anubrata Mandal’s daughter & five others within 24 hours of asking cops to ensure their presence.
On Wednesday, Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava administered oath of office to nine additional judges — justices Biswaroop Chowdhury, Partha Sarathi Sen, Prasenjit Biswas, Uday Kumar, Ajay Kumar Gupta, Supratim Bhattacharya, Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, Apurba Sinha Ray and Md Shabbar Rashidi.
“In the last 36 years that I have been practising in this court, I have never seen an HC bench strength of more than 50 judges. Today, we have 55 judges. I have also never been part of any oath-taking ceremony in which nine judges took oath on the same day,” said Bengal Advocate General S N Mookherjee.
He said, “I expect & fervently hope that all the judges sworn in today & the members of the bar will work together in rendering both justice & in applying the law".
Incorporated Law Society vice-president Jaideep Kar also said he had not witnessed the number of Judges cross the 50-mark in his 38-year practice at the HC.
