‘Threat Letter to Judge’: 80 Advocates write to CJI, Law Minister

 

On Thursday, nearly 80 practising Lawyers at the Calcutta High Court wrote a letter to CJI N V Ramana & Union law minister Kiren Rijiju drawing attention to the recent threat letter sent to the special CBI Judge Rajesh Chakraborty in Asansol. Protesting the attempt to intimidate the Judge, the Advocates sought Centre’s intervention & asked for transferring the case out of Bengal.

“The administration of justice may not be interfered with or hampered & the erring persons need to be punished accordingly,” the lawyers wrote. A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a probe into the alleged letter.

On Tuesday, the special CBI Judge said he had received a ‘threat letter’, which said his family would be framed in a drugs case if Birbhum Trinamool leader Anubrata Mandal was not granted bail in the cattle-smuggling case by Wednesday.

 

The letter bore the signature of Bappa Chatterjee, head clerk of the executive magistrate, Purba Burdwan. Chatterjee, however, told the news agency that he did not write the letter. “I did not write it. The seal on the letter too is false. I have taken up the matter with my seniors,” Chatterjee said, fearing that an advocate recently banished from the bar might have done the “mischief”. The Asansol Police Commissionerate has started an inquiry. Judge Chakraborty drew the attention of the district judge to the letter & also sent a copy to the registrar-general of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday..

Anubrata, while being taken to Asansol court on Wednesday morning, reiterated that it was an “act by BJP”.
