Justice UU Lalit sworn in as 49th Chief Justice of India

On Saturday, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India.

Kind Meaning of the Law: Purposes of Law, Protecting Liberties and Rights

President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Lalit at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He will have a 74-day tenure since he retires on November 8.

He said that during his 74-day tenure as the CJI, he would strive hard to make the listing process for fresh cases as simple, effective, quick and transparent as possible. He also mentioned another area of daily squabbles between lawyers and registry officials - permission to mention matters requiring urgent listing.

"I will look into this issue and discuss with my colleagues to come out with a regime for free mentioning of urgent matters before concerned benches," Justice Lalit said.

At present, fresh matters requiring urgent listing are mentioned before the CJI-led bench. If he allows mentioning of matters as per the roster - subject-wise distribution of cases before Judges, then it would ease a lot of pressure on the CJI's bench every morning.

'SC to have permanent 5-judge bench'

Justice Lalit also said that there will be a permanent five-judge bench in the Supreme Court, which is constitutionally tasked to interpret the law and decide important constitutional questions. He also promised to expedite hearing on cases referred to three-judge benches.

NV Ramana, who retired from the post of CJI on Friday, had recommended Justice Lalit's name to the government as his successor. Ramana had expressed confidence that with his long and rich experience in the bar as well as on the bench, Justice Lalit will take the institution of judiciary to greater heights through his able leadership.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Ramana said that the end of his tenure just marks the end of his constitutional assignment, and he would try to fulfil the constitutional vows till his last breath.

The farewell function was organised by Supreme Court Bar Association.

During his speech, Ramana also said that he wants to be remembered as a judge who heard the senior and the junior alike and wanted his name to be etched on the hearts of the people through his conduct and behaviour, rather than case law and journals.
