Together with celebrating the exuberant occasion of 75th year of Independence of India, Madras High Court on Monday also celebrated 160 glorious years of its existence.
The Madras High Court, said to house the largest number of courtrooms in Asia. The High Court in southern region of India was granted a Letters Patent by the Majesty Queen Victoria on 26th June 1862.
It formally came into existence on 15th August 1862.
To commemorate 160 years of its establishment, Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari released a commemorative stamp, "Corporate My Stamp", bearing an image of the High court building and its logo which was received by Justice Duraiswamy.
Gold Medals and Certificates were also awarded to four drivers R Natarajan, J Shajahan, Am Thirunakarasu and CM Lokesh, for completing 20 years of unblemished service in the Madras High Court.
Chief Justice Bhandari along with Justice T Raja also distributed prizes to three winners (L Shruthi, R Manimeghalai and VB Gautham Tilak) of the State Level Elocution competition conducted at the Tamil Nadu Judicial Academy Headquarters, Chennai on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
