On Monday, a Delhi Court extended by 2 weeks the judicial custody of Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case. Special Judge Geetanjli Goel sent Jain to judicial custody for 14 days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought an extension of his custody.

Earlier during the day, the judge refused to entertain the plea noting that neither Jain nor any lawyer representing him was present before the court during the proceedings. After being told that Jain was hospitalised, the court directed the ED to ensure Jain’s presence before it later in the day through videoconferencing. Jain was admitted at a hospital after his oxygen level dipped & hence, produced through videoconferencing later in the day.

The Court had earlier sent him to judicial custody for 14 days on expiry of his Enforcement Directorate remand, stating that the matter was still stated to be at the stage of investigation & the possibility of him influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence could not be ruled out.

The ED had alleged that Jain, while posted & functioning as Minister in the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, during the period from Feb 14, 2015, to May 31, 2017, acquired assets in the form of movable & immovable properties in his name & in the name of his family members, which were disproportionate to his “known sources of income”.

The CBI has already filed a charge sheet against the minister under the Prevention of Corruption Act for “disproportionate income”. The ED’s case is based on a CBI FIR of 2017.
