Fake CBI Director: Man awarded 3 years’ rigorous imprisonment

 

On Tuesday, a Special CBI Court held a man accused of conspiring with a co-accused who impersonated as director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2011 to cheat & extort a person for Rs 50 lakh guilty. The Court sentenced him to 3 years’ rigorous imprisonment.

Special Judge A S Sayyad in the Judgment said that “This is a famous case of fake CBI senior officers where two persons allegedly impersonated themselves as CBI officers & for not taking action against complainant not only extorted Rs 50 lakh from him but also from several other persons as well.’’

The Court after hearing CBI prosecutor Sandeep Singh and defence counsel Madhukar Dalvi’s final arguments convicted Rajesh Ranjan for cheating, criminal conspiracy under the Prevention of Corruption Act for impersonating public servants to intentionally dupe the complainant. The trial of accused number 1, A K Sharma, stood separated last December. Dalvi said there was no evidence of either demand or recovery of money.
