On Monday, the Govt of Haryana sanctioned 21-day parole to Dera Sacha Sauda chief head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is serving sentence in the Sunaria jail of Rohtak since Aug 2018. He was first convicted for the rape of a sadhvi. Last year, he was convicted for the murders of 2 dera followers.
The Haryana Govt's decision to grant parole to the Dera chief comes ahead of assembly polls in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand & two other states. Dera has a considerable influence in UP, Punjab and Uttarakhand.
In May last year too, Ram Rahim was granted one-day parole to visit his ailing mother in Gurugram.
Reacting to Gurmeet's parole, Haryana jail minister Ranjeet Singh Chautala said that parole is the right of every convict.
Treading cautiously, Chautala refrained from commenting further.
He said as far as clearances concerned & formalities for Ram Rahim's release are concerned, this is the subject matter of divisional commissioner, deputy commissioner & the civil administration.
Chautala added, "It is only after they give a clearance, the convict is granted parole".
As per the latest reports, the Dera chief has already left the Sunaria jail.
The Dera management has kept its chief's program under wraps while citing security reasons.
