As many as 76 Supreme Court lawyers have written to Chief Justice NV Ramana and urged him to take suo moto cognizance of recent hate speeches in Haridwar and Delhi targeting the minority community and calling for "ethnic cleansing".
In the letter, the lawyers said the remarks don't just tantamount to mere hate speeches but amount to an open call for "murder of an entire community".
"The speeches thus, pose a grave threat not just to the unity and integrity of our country but also endanger the lives of millions of Muslim citizens," the letter said.
The Lawyers urged the CJI to take suo moto cognizance in view of the seriousness and gravity of the events.
The Advocates said that the letter has been addressed with the hope that CJI will take prompt action in his capacity as the head of the judicial wing of the state.
The Lawyers were referring the a 'Dharma Sansad' held at Ved Niketan Dham in Haridwar from December 17-20 where hate speeches were allegedly made against a community.
