New Delhi: Earlier this week,
the Calcutta high court provided relief to a transgender person who had
filed a case saying the 2021 recruitment form for the post of
sub-inspector and sergeant in the Kolkata police doesn’t allow trans
persons to apply.
According to LiveLaw,
Justice Arindam Mukherjee had sought a response from the state
government on the matter on September 6. On Wednesday (September 29),
the court was told that on September 14, the state government had
revised the rules to allow transgender persons to apply for the
position.
“With
the apt intervention on the part of the advocate representing the
State, the Government of West Bengal has taken a decision to allow the
transgender person to appear in the examination for recruitment to the
post of Sub-Inspector/Lady Sub-Inspector (unarmed branch). The decision
so taken by the State Government on 14th September, 2021 was duly
communicated to the advocate representing the State,” the bench said on
Wednesday.
The petition was then disposed of, since the petitioner’s grievance
had been addressed. “The individual grievance, if any, of the petitioner
for allowing age relaxation to permit the petitioner to apply as a
transgender and other issues may be ventilated by the petitioner by
filing appropriate representation to the concerned authority,” the court
said.
