SC Lawyer files complaint against Rahul Gandhi for revealing identity of Delhi minor rape victim

 Rahul Gandhi

Acomplaint has been received from a Supreme Court Lawyer at Delhi's Tilak Marg police station against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's tweet that 'disclosed' the identity of the family of the nine-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and murdered in Delhi Cantonment area earlier this month.

This comes days after Delhi BJP spokesperson Naveen Kumar visited Barakhamba Road police station and lodged a complaint against Rahul Gandhi over the same issue.

The lawyer alleged that Rahul Gandhi violated the rules of the POCSO Act and demanded that the complaint should be registered under this provision.

An FIR is yet to be registered and the police said that they will investigate the nature of the complaint.

BJP leader Jitendra Gothwal had also registered a complaint against the Congress MP and Twitter at a sessions court in Jaipur on August 10.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has also been filed in he Delhi High Court by Maharashtra-based social activist Makarand Suresh Mhadlekar seeking directions to Twitter and the city police to take action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

What did Rahul Gandhi tweet?

Earlier this month, Rahul Gandhi met family members of the minor from Nangal village who was allegedly murdered and forcibly cremated. The former Congress president had also posted pictures of his meeting with the family on Twitter, following which his account was temporarily locked in violation of the law.

The pictures were later taken down by the micro-blogging site owing to allegations by the girl's kin that she might have been sexually assaulted by the four accused. As per the law, revealing the identity of a minor rape victim counts as an offence.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had reached out to Delhi Police and Twitter, asking them to take action against Rahul Gandhi for posting pictures of the girl's family that might reveal her identity.

Congress accounts locked, Twitter says tweets violated rules

After Rahul Gandhi, Twitter temporarily locked Congress party's official account along with accounts of several other party leaders, including Randeep Surjewala, Ajay Maken and Sushmita Dev, saying they violated the rules.

In the wake of the action, Congress had accused Twitter of buckling under the pressure of the Narendra Modi-led central government.

However, the accounts were unlocked on Saturday morning after a week.

No objection with Rahul Gandhi revealing identity, says victim's mother

The mother of the nine-year-old victim said that they have no objections to any tweet or photo.

The family members immersed the minor's ashes in Haridwar on Friday. Security personnel were present with the family during the ritual.
