New Delhi: The Gurugram police has registered an FIR against the man who recently made provocative communal speeches at a mahapanchayat at Pataudi in Haryana on July 4.

This is the same man who, as a minor then had shot at anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protesters at Jamia Millia Islamia in 2020, injuring a college student. He was released on bail within months.

Indian Express has quoted the Manesar DCP Varun Singla as having said that the FIR against the accused has been registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code.

The complaint was allegedly submitted by a resident of Jamalpur village.

In a detailed study of the accused and his popularity online, Kaushik Raj and Alishan Jafri had noted for The Wire how video clips containing his speeches spread and the content it held.

At the mahapanchayat, the accused asked Hindu audience members to avenge “love jihad” by abducting Muslim women. The audience was also heard chanting anti-Muslim slogans.

“When Muslims are murdered, they will shout ‘Ram Ram’,” the accused is also heard saying.

Raj and Jafri’s report essays the number of times the accused has released social media content that openly calls for violence against Muslims. A series of videos also bear indication of violence done and are titled ‘gau raksha’ or cow protection.
