Narendra Modi Wishes 'Speedy Recovery' from COVID-19 to Pakistan PM Imran Khan

New Delhi: In another sign of ties between the countries warming just a bit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Pakistan Imran Khan a speedy recovery from his infection with COVID-19.

On Saturday afternoon, the Pakistani prime minister’s special assistant on health issues, Faisal Sultan, announced on Twitter that Khan had tested positive for COVID-19.

Khan had received the first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine two days ago.

Pakistan’s ministry of national health services posted a clarification that Khan had not been “fully vaccinated” as he had only got the first dose two days ago, which was too soon for the development of antibodies.

Later on Saturday evening, the Indian prime minister sent his “best wishes” to Khan for “speedy recovery from Covid-19”.

There has been a cooling down in rhetoric from both sides over the last two months, which mirror the relative calm at the Line of Control.

Last month, Indian and Pakistani military issued a joint statement that they would strictly abide by the ceasefire along the LoC. This was the first such understanding reached by the two South Asian rivals since 2003.

There has also been public remarks made by the Pakistani military chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, which seemed to indicate that they would like to resume talks with India.

On Thursday, Bajwa had said that it was “time to bury the past and move forward”. He did say that India should take conciliatory steps in Kashmir create a “conducive environment”, but did not repeat the earlier position that the constitutional changes introduced by India last year will have to be completely rolled back.

In recent times, India has also not explicitly reiterated previous statements that talks and terror cannot go together.
