This statement of the US State Department has come on the criticism of the Indian Foreign Ministry on the support of the farmers movement of many celebrities including American singer Rihanna. The department also said that the US welcomes steps that improve the Indian market and attract large-scale private investment.
"We believe that peaceful demonstrations are a sign of any vibrant democracy, the same has been said by the Supreme Court of India." Stressing that all parties should come together to find a solution, the US Department said, "America welcomes steps that improve India's market and attract large-scale private investment." He added, "We believe that the smooth flow of information, including the Internet, is an integral part of freedom of expression and a hallmark of living democracy." This statement from the US State Department has brought about the reaction of the Indian Foreign Ministry in which they criticized the comments of American singer Rihanna and Meena Harris, the niece of the Vice President of the US. A spokesman for the US Embassy in India issued a similar statement and said, "These are the views of private people." I cannot comment on the views of private people. ' Popstar Rihanna shared a CNN article titled 'India Cuts Internet Around New Delty Age Protecting Farmers Clash With Police' and expressed support for the farmer movement. Rihanna tweeted and said, 'Why are we not talking about the farmers' movement?' Rihanna has more than 100 million followers on Twitter and she is ranked fourth in the world in this matter. Apart from this, Greta Thanberg, who works towards environment and climate change, also shared CNN's article and expressed her support for the farmers' movement in a more clear way. The Delhi Police has also filed a case against Thenberg regarding this. However, the environmental activist said in another tweet that she is firm on her statement and will continue to support the farmer movement. Meena Harris, the niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris, also said that everyone should be angry with the shutdown of the Internet in India and the violence of paramilitary forces against peasant protesters. He said that the world's most populous democracy has been attacked. US Rep. Jim Acosta, British MP Claudia Webb, activist Jamie Margolin and actor John Cusack have also expressed support for the peasant movement. After Rihanna and Thunberg, while many other celebrities from around the world also voiced their support for the farmers, both of them had to become victims of trolling in India. In the midst of the international support to the peasant movement, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement calling it irresponsible. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anurag Shrivastava issued a statement saying, "The way to seduce sensational social media hashtags and comments, especially when done by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible." In this regard, the Ministry of External Affairs said, "Before commenting on such matters, we urge that the facts be ascertained and issues properly understood. The Parliament of India passed reformist laws related to the agricultural sector after full debate and discussion. ' Following the ministry's comment, a whole army of Indian artists, cricketers, singers, etc., stood up, who tweeted in a similar tweet that 'India can resolve its own issues and they are against any propaganda'. The special thing is that many of these people had not yet commented on the peasant movement. It includes people like Sachin Tendulkar, Akshay Kumar, Karan Johar, Kangana Ranaut. At the same time, some artists / celebrities responded to this saying that if just a tweet of foreigners on any issue makes India feel threatened, then we need to peek into our own self before criticizing anyone else. It is known that the peasant movement has attracted international attention when the borders of Delhi have been converted into a fort. The police conducted several level barricades to stop the movement of vehicles and internet services were stopped. Three bills related to agriculture imposed by the central government - Farmer Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Price Assurance Contracts and Agricultural Services Bill, 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020- For the last two and a half months, farmers have been demonstrating on the borders of Delhi. There have been 11 rounds of talks between the government and farmers about this, but so far no solution has been found. The farmers have been firm on their demand for complete withdrawal of the three new agricultural laws and legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP).
