Verify newspapers before publishing news of foreign publications: Press Council of India

New Delhi: Describing irregular circulation of foreign material as unnecessary, the Press Council of India (PCI) has said that Indian newspapers should first verify the parts of foreign publications that they need to publish.
In a media advisory issued on 25 November, the PCI said that the choice is predicated on requests received from various departments of the govt regarding the responsibility of Indian newspapers in publishing foreign material.
It was further stated within the advisory that despite being given the source, the reporter, editor and publisher are going to be held liable for the content published in Indian newspapers.
Editorials of foreign publications including Washington Post, ny Times and therefore the Economist are often published in Indian newspapers.

As The Wire has reported earlier, in recent times an outsized number of foreign publications are criticizing the Narendra Modi government and therefore the Bharatiya Janata Party.
While PCI Advisory is for Indian newspapers, the Modi government has enacted several rules to curb foreign journalists and publications. for instance , J-visa holders (for journalists) weren't a part of the list of visa holders of the Ministry of Home Affairs, who were being admitted to India during the unlock process of Kovid-19, with none explanation. This rule was changed after this news was published.
Along with this, recently the Modi government has fixed the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit of 26 percent in digital media.
Due to this, many foreign publications running Indian editions face difficulties and this is often why HuffPost India stopped working in India in the week .
