Today, 22 May is an international biodiversity day. The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 the
International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of
biodiversity issues. The theme of the 2020 biodiversity is “OUR SOLUTIONS ARE IN NATURE”.As occupiers of Earth, we are neighboring by extraordinary, amazing species and natural processes that have evolved over the course of our planet’s long history. Over these millions of years, life has found its way into some pretty unique niches. Evolution has forced species to adapt in order to survive, a process that has found answers to almost every problem imaginable. Nature has a remarkable problem-solving ability.
Do you know biomimicry? Biomimicry is a process whereby the design and production of materials,
structures, and systems are modeled on biological entities and processes. It's used everywhere,
buildings, vehicles, etc. Nature teaches us to trial and error to achieve the targets. Sometimes the
problem is not as complex as the human mind thinks. Just look to nature as a Model, Measure, and
Mentor. There are some ways engineers inspired by nature: Understanding Biomimicry, kingfisher, and the Shinkansen train. Whales and wind turbines etc. This biomimicry allows us to save our problems and maintain sustainability which gives a new way of viewing and valuing biodiversity.
Biodiversity boosts
ecosystem productivity for each species, no matter how small, how long, all animals, plants, insects;
microbes are valuable parts of our ecosystem. They not only support life but essential for supplying
oxygen, clean air, clean water, pollination of plants, pest controls, wastewater treatment, and many
ecosystem-based services. Conservation of Biodiversity in India is a very significant step that
involves conservation and management of wildlife, includes in situ conservation, ex-situ conservation,
biospheres, etc. Project Tiger is one such plan.
Biodiversity loss is a direct result of our short-sighted human activities including uncontrolled
mining and infrastructure development, unsustainable farming, and deforestation, said Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, CBD Acting Executive Secretary. “All these have degraded ecosystems and have created the conditions that lead to events like possibly the pandemic.” “While the world is striving to end this pandemic, we all need to take urgent concerted and collaborative actions to build a resilient and sustainable globe.
In this COVID-19 pandemic, one thing is very well understood that despite our technological advances, humans are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our health, water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy. This is the time to show our affection towards nature to save ourselves.
Let's pledge today, this time to save our biodiversity. Anyway as we can. Because whatever we give
to nature: nature returns us. LOVE NATURE AND NATURE WILL YOU.
"Keep smiling, stay home and Love nature"
